53. An-Najm - The Star (سورة النجم) - Revealed in Makkah

Verse 1 | (53:1)

English
By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes).

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَالنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَى

Verse 2 | (53:2)

English
Your companion (Muhammad SAW) has neither gone astray nor has erred.

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَى

Verse 3 | (53:3)

English
Nor does he speak of (his own) desire.

وَمَا يَنْطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَى

Verse 4 | (53:4)

English
It is only an Inspiration that is inspired.

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَى

Verse 5 | (53:5)

English
He has been taught (this Qur'ân) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)].

عَلَّمَهُ شَدِيدُ الْقُوَى

Verse 6 | (53:6)

English
Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabarî].

ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَى

Verse 7 | (53:7)

English
While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon,

وَهُوَ بِالْأُفُقِ الْأَعْلَى

Verse 8 | (53:8)

English
Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer,

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّى

Verse 9 | (53:9)

English
And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer,

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَى

Verse 10 | (53:10)

English
So did (Allâh) convey the Inspiration to His slave [Muhammad SAW through Jibrael (Gabriel) <><>].

فَأَوْحَى إِلَى عَبْدِهِ مَا أَوْحَى

Verse 11 | (53:11)

English
The (Prophet's) heart lied not (in seeing) what he (Muhammad SAW) saw.

مَا كَذَبَ الْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَى

Verse 12 | (53:12)

English
Will you then dispute with him (Muhammad SAW) about what he saw [during the Mi'râj: (Ascent of the Prophet SAW over the seven heavens)] .

أَفَتُمَارُونَهُ عَلَى مَا يَرَى

Verse 13 | (53:13)

English
And indeed he (Muhammad SAW) saw him [Jibrael (Gabriel)] at a second descent (i.e. another time).

وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَى

Verse 14 | (53:14)

English
Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)],

عِنْدَ سِدْرَةِ الْمُنْتَهَى

Verse 15 | (53:15)

English
Near it is the Paradise of Abode.

عِنْدَهَا جَنَّةُ الْمَأْوَى

Verse 16 | (53:16)

English
When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it!

إِذْ يَغْشَى السِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَى

Verse 17 | (53:17)

English
The sight (of Prophet Muhammad SAW) turned not aside (right or left), nor it transgressed beyond (the) limit (ordained for it).

مَا زَاغَ الْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَى

Verse 18 | (53:18)

English
Indeed he (Muhammad SAW) did see, of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allâh).

لَقَدْ رَأَى مِنْ آيَاتِ رَبِّهِ الْكُبْرَى

Verse 19 | (53:19)

English
Have you then considered Al-Lât, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs)

أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ اللَّاتَ وَالْعُزَّى

Verse 20 | (53:20)

English
And Manât (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third?

وَمَنَاةَ الثَّالِثَةَ الْأُخْرَى

Verse 21 | (53:21)

English
Is it for you the males and for Him the females?

أَلَكُمُ الذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ الْأُنْثَى

Verse 22 | (53:22)

English
That indeed is a division most unfair!

تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَى

Verse 23 | (53:23)

English
They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allâh has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord!

إِنْ هِيَ إِلَّا أَسْمَاءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَا أَنْتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمْ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِنْ سُلْطَانٍ إِنْ يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى الْأَنْفُسُ وَلَقَدْ جَاءَهُمْ مِنْ رَبِّهِمُ الْهُدَى

Verse 24 | (53:24)

English
Or shall man have what he wishes?

أَمْ لِلْإِنْسَانِ مَا تَمَنَّى

Verse 25 | (53:25)

English
But to Allâh belongs the last (Hereafter) and the first (the world).

فَلِلَّهِ الْآخِرَةُ وَالْأُولَى

Verse 26 | (53:26)

English
And there are many angels in the heavens, whose intercession will avail nothing except after Allâh has given leave for whom He wills and pleases.

وَكَمْ مِنْ مَلَكٍ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ لَا تُغْنِي شَفَاعَتُهُمْ شَيْئًا إِلَّا مِنْ بَعْدِ أَنْ يَأْذَنَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَرْضَى

Verse 27 | (53:27)

English
Verily, those who believe not in the Hereafter, name the angels with female names.

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ الْأُنْثَى

Verse 28 | (53:28)

English
While they have no knowledge thereof. They follow but a guess, and verily, guess is no substitute for the truth.

وَمَا لَهُمْ بِهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ إِنْ يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ وَإِنَّ الظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْئًا

Verse 29 | (53:29)

English
Therefore withdraw (O Muhammad SAW) from him who turns away from Our Reminder (this Qur'ân) and desires nothing but the life of this world.

فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْ مَنْ تَوَلَّى عَنْ ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا

Verse 30 | (53:30)

English
That is what they could reach of knowledge. Verily, your Lord it is He Who knows best him who goes astray from His Path, and He knows best him who receives guidance.

ذَلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اهْتَدَى

Verse 31 | (53:31)

English
And to Allâh belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, that He may requite those who do evil with that which they have done (i.e. punish them in Hell), and reward those who do good, with what is best (i.e. Paradise).

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسَاءُوا بِمَا عَمِلُوا وَيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا بِالْحُسْنَى

Verse 32 | (53:32)

English
Those who avoid great sins (see the Qur'ân, Verses: 6:152,153) and Al-Fawâhish (illegal sexual intercourse, etc.) except the small faults, verily, your Lord is of vast forgiveness. He knows you well when He created you from the earth (Adam), and when you were fetuses in your mothers' wombs. So ascribe not purity to yourselves. He knows best him who fears Allâh and keep his duty to Him [i.e. those who are Al-Muttaqûn (pious - see V.2:2)].

الَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَائِرَ الْإِثْمِ وَالْفَوَاحِشَ إِلَّا اللَّمَمَ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَاسِعُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنْشَأَكُمْ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنْتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِي بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقَى

Verse 33 | (53:33)

English
Did you (O Muhammad SAW) observe him who turned away (from Islâm).

أَفَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي تَوَلَّى

Verse 34 | (53:34)

English
And gave a little, then stopped (giving)?

وَأَعْطَى قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَى

Verse 35 | (53:35)

English
Is with him the knowledge of the unseen so that he sees?

أَعِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ الْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَى

Verse 36 | (53:36)

English
Or is he not informed with what is in the Pages (Scripture) of Mûsa (Moses),

أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِي صُحُفِ مُوسَى

Verse 37 | (53:37)

English
And of Ibrâhim (Abraham) who fulfilled (or conveyed) all that (what Allâh ordered him to do or convey),

وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ الَّذِي وَفَّى

Verse 38 | (53:38)

English
That no burdened person (with sins) shall bear the burden (sins) of another,T>

أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى

Verse 39 | (53:39)

English
And that man can have nothing but what he does (good or bad) ,

وَأَنْ لَيْسَ لِلْإِنْسَانِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَى

Verse 40 | (53:40)

English
And that his deeds will be seen,

وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُ سَوْفَ يُرَى

Verse 41 | (53:41)

English
Then he will be recompensed with a full and the best recompense

ثُمَّ يُجْزَاهُ الْجَزَاءَ الْأَوْفَى

Verse 42 | (53:42)

English
And that to your Lord (Allâh) is the End (Return of everything).

وَأَنَّ إِلَى رَبِّكَ الْمُنْتَهَى

Verse 43 | (53:43)

English
And that it is He (Allâh) Who makes (whom He wills) laugh, and makes (whom He wills) weep;

وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَى

Verse 44 | (53:44)

English
And that it is He (Allâh) Who causes death and gives life;

وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا

Verse 45 | (53:45)

English
And that He (Allâh) creates the pairs, male and female,

وَأَنَّهُ خَلَقَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنْثَى

Verse 46 | (53:46)

English
From Nutfah (drops of semen male and female discharges) when it is emitted;

مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَى

Verse 47 | (53:47)

English
And that upon Him (Allâh) is another bringing forth (Resurrection);

وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُخْرَى

Verse 48 | (53:48)

English
And that it is He (Allâh) Who gives much or a little (or gives wealth and contentment),

وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَغْنَى وَأَقْنَى

Verse 49 | (53:49)

English
And that He (Allâh) is the Lord of Sirius (the star which the pagan Arabs used to worship);

وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ رَبُّ الشِّعْرَى

Verse 50 | (53:50)

English
And that it is He (Allâh) Who destroyed the former 'Ad (people),

وَأَنَّهُ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا الْأُولَى

Verse 51 | (53:51)

English
And Thamûd (people). He spared none of them.

وَثَمُودَ فَمَا أَبْقَى

Verse 52 | (53:52)

English
And the people of Nûh (Noah) aforetime, verily, they were more unjust and more rebellious and transgressing [in disobeying Allâh and His Messenger Nûh (Noah) <><>].

وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِنْ قَبْلُ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَى

Verse 53 | (53:53)

English
And He destroyed the overthrown cities [of Sodom to which Prophet Lout (Lot) was sent].

وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَى

Verse 54 | (53:54)

English
So there covered them that which did cover (i.e. torment with stones).

فَغَشَّاهَا مَا غَشَّى

Verse 55 | (53:55)

English
Then which of the Graces of your Lord (O man!) will you doubt.

فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَى

Verse 56 | (53:56)

English
This (Muhammad SAW) is a warner (Messenger) of the (series of) warners (Messengers) of old .

هَذَا نَذِيرٌ مِنَ النُّذُرِ الْأُولَى

Verse 57 | (53:57)

English
The Day of Resurrection draws near,

أَزِفَتِ الْآزِفَةُ

Verse 58 | (53:58)

English
None besides Allâh can avert it, (or advance it, or delay it).

لَيْسَ لَهَا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ

Verse 59 | (53:59)

English
Do you then wonder at this recital (the Qur'ân)?

أَفَمِنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ

Verse 60 | (53:60)

English
And you laugh at it and weep not,

وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ

Verse 61 | (53:61)

English
Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing, etc.).

وَأَنْتُمْ سَامِدُونَ

Verse 62 | (53:62)

English
So fall you down in prostration to Allâh, and worship Him (Alone).

فَاسْجُدُوا لِلَّهِ وَاعْبُدُوا
