Hâ-Mîm.

[These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'ân and none but Allâh (Alone) knows their meanings].

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ حم
Verse 2 | (44:2)

By the manifest Book (this Qur'ân) that makes things clear,
وَالْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ
Verse 3 | (44:3)

We sent it (this Qur'ân) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Sûrah No: 97) in the month of Ramadân,, the 9th month of the Islâmic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship].
إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةٍ مُبَارَكَةٍ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنْذِرِينَ
Verse 4 | (44:4)

Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments .
فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيمٍ
Verse 5 | (44:5)

Amran (i.e. a Command or this Qur'an or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers),
أَمْرًا مِنْ عِنْدِنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ
Verse 6 | (44:6)

(As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.
رَحْمَةً مِنْ رَبِّكَ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
Verse 7 | (44:7)

The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty.
رَبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُوقِنِينَ
Verse 8 | (44:8)

Lâ ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers.
لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ آبَائِكُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Verse 9 | (44:9)

Nay! They play in doubt.
بَلْ هُمْ فِي شَكٍّ يَلْعَبُونَ
Verse 10 | (44:10)

Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke.
فَارْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِي السَّمَاءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُبِينٍ
Verse 11 | (44:11)

Covering the people, this is a painful torment.
يَغْشَى النَّاسَ هَذَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

(They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!"
رَبَّنَا اكْشِفْ عَنَّا الْعَذَابَ إِنَّا مُؤْمِنُونَ
Verse 13 | (44:13)

How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them.
أَنَّى لَهُمُ الذِّكْرَى وَقَدْ جَاءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ مُبِينٌ
Verse 14 | (44:14)

Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!"
ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا مُعَلَّمٌ مَجْنُونٌ
Verse 15 | (44:15)

Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert.
إِنَّا كَاشِفُو الْعَذَابِ قَلِيلًا إِنَّكُمْ عَائِدُونَ
Verse 16 | (44:16)

On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution.
يَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ الْبَطْشَةَ الْكُبْرَى إِنَّا مُنْتَقِمُونَ
Verse 17 | (44:17)

And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Mûsa (Moses) <><>],
وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجَاءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ كَرِيمٌ
Verse 18 | (44:18)

Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allâh (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust,
أَنْ أَدُّوا إِلَيَّ عِبَادَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
Verse 19 | (44:19)

"And exalt not (yourselves) against Allâh. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority.
وَأَنْ لَا تَعْلُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ إِنِّي آتِيكُمْ بِسُلْطَانٍ مُبِينٍ
Verse 20 | (44:20)

"And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me).
وَإِنِّي عُذْتُ بِرَبِّي وَرَبِّكُمْ أَنْ تَرْجُمُونِ
Verse 21 | (44:21)

"But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone."
وَإِنْ لَمْ تُؤْمِنُوا لِي فَاعْتَزِلُونِ

(But they were aggressive), so he [Mûsa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimûn (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)."
فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ أَنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ قَوْمٌ مُجْرِمُونَ
Verse 23 | (44:23)

(Allâh said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued.
فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِي لَيْلًا إِنَّكُمْ مُتَّبَعُونَ
Verse 24 | (44:24)

"And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned."
وَاتْرُكِ الْبَحْرَ رَهْوًا إِنَّهُمْ جُنْدٌ مُغْرَقُونَ
Verse 25 | (44:25)

How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left.
كَمْ تَرَكُوا مِنْ جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places,
وَزُرُوعٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ
Verse 27 | (44:27)

And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight!
وَنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوا فِيهَا فَاكِهِينَ
Verse 28 | (44:28)

Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt).
كَذَلِكَ وَأَوْرَثْنَاهَا قَوْمًا آخَرِينَ
Verse 29 | (44:29)

And the heavens and the earth wept not for them , nor were they given a respite.
فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّمَاءُ وَالْأَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا مُنْظَرِينَ
Verse 30 | (44:30)

And indeed We saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment,
وَلَقَدْ نَجَّيْنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ الْمُهِينِ
Verse 31 | (44:31)

From Fir'aun (Pharaoh); Verily! He was arrogant and was of the Musrifûn (those who transgress beyond bound in spending and other things and commit great sins).
مِنْ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُ كَانَ عَالِيًا مِنَ الْمُسْرِفِينَ
Verse 32 | (44:32)

And We chose them (the Children of Israel) above the 'Alamîn (mankind, and jinns) [during the time of Mûsa (Moses)] with knowledge,
وَلَقَدِ اخْتَرْنَاهُمْ عَلَى عِلْمٍ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ
Verse 33 | (44:33)

And granted them signs in which there was a plain trial.
وَآتَيْنَاهُمْ مِنَ الْآيَاتِ مَا فِيهِ بَلَاءٌ مُبِينٌ
Verse 34 | (44:34)

Verily, these (Quraish) people are saying:
إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ لَيَقُولُونَ
Verse 35 | (44:35)

"There is nothing but our first death, and we shall not be resurrected.
إِنْ هِيَ إِلَّا مَوْتَتُنَا الْأُولَى وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُنْشَرِينَ
Verse 36 | (44:36)

"Then bring back our fore-fathers, if you speak the truth!"
فَأْتُوا بِآبَائِنَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ

Are they better or the people of Tubba' and those before them? We destroyed them because they were indeed Mujrimûn (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.).
أَهُمْ خَيْرٌ أَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ وَالَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ أَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا مُجْرِمِينَ
Verse 38 | (44:38)

And We created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, for mere play,
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لَاعِبِينَ
Verse 39 | (44:39)

We created them not except with truth (i.e. to examine and test those who are obedient and those who are disobedient and then reward the obedient ones and punish the disobedient ones), but most of them know not.
مَا خَلَقْنَاهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
Verse 40 | (44:40)

Verily, the Day of Judgement (when Allâh will judge between the creatures) is the time appointed for all of them,
إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ مِيقَاتُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
Verse 41 | (44:41)

The Day when Maulan (a near relative) cannot avail Maulan (a near relative) in aught, and no help can they receive,
يَوْمَ لَا يُغْنِي مَوْلًى عَنْ مَوْلًى شَيْئًا وَلَا هُمْ يُنْصَرُونَ
Verse 42 | (44:42)

English
Except him on whom Allâh has Mercy. Verily, He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
إِلَّا مَنْ رَحِمَ اللَّهُ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
Verse 43 | (44:43)

Verily, the tree of Zaqqûm,
إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقُّومِ

Will be the food of the sinners,
طَعَامُ الْأَثِيمِ

Like boiling oil, it will boil in the bellies,
كَالْمُهْلِ يَغْلِي فِي الْبُطُونِ
Verse 46 | (44:46)

Like the boiling of scalding water.
كَغَلْيِ الْحَمِيمِ
Verse 47 | (44:47)

(It will be said) "Seize him and drag him into the midst of blazing Fire,
خُذُوهُ فَاعْتِلُوهُ إِلَى سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ

"Then pour over his head the torment of boiling water,
ثُمَّ صُبُّوا فَوْقَ رَأْسِهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْحَمِيمِ

"Taste you (this)! Verily, you were (pretending to be) the mighty, the generous!
ذُقْ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْكَرِيمُ

 "Verily! This is that whereof you used to doubt!"
إِنَّ هَذَا مَا كُنْتُمْ بِهِ تَمْتَرُونَ

Verily! The Muttaqûn (pious - see V.2:2), will be in place of Security (Paradise).
إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي مَقَامٍ أَمِينٍ

Among Gardens and Springs;
فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

Dressed in fine silk and (also) in thick silk, facing each other,
يَلْبَسُونَ مِنْ سُنْدُسٍ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍ مُتَقَابِلِينَ
Verse 54 | (44:54)

So (it will be), and We shall marry them to Houris (female fair ones) with wide, lovely eyes.
كَذَلِكَ وَزَوَّجْنَاهُمْ بِحُورٍ عِينٍ
Verse 55 | (44:55)

They will call therein for every kind of fruit in peace and security;
يَدْعُونَ فِيهَا بِكُلِّ فَاكِهَةٍ آمِنِينَ

They will never taste death therein except the first death (of this world), and He will save them from the torment of the blazing Fire,
لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا الْمَوْتَ إِلَّا الْمَوْتَةَ الْأُولَى وَوَقَاهُمْ عَذَابَ الْجَحِيمِ
Verse 57 | (44:57)

As a Bounty from your Lord! That will be the supreme success!
فَضْلًا مِنْ رَبِّكَ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ
Verse 58 | (44:58)

Certainly, We have made this (Qur'ân) easy in your tongue, in order that they may remember.
فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَاهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ
Verse 59 | (44:59)

Wait then (O Muhammad SAW); Verily, they (too) are waiting.
فَارْتَقِبْ إِنَّهُمْ مُرْتَقِبُونَ
